Coffee Bean Buffet

Honestly, the title of this post is a little misleading, because Coffee Bean Buffet really doesn’t do it justice! I think, Elegant and Sophisticated Buffet is a more fitting title!

This is a commission piece, and my client chose the Dixie Belle chalk mineral paint color, Coffee Bean for the finish. This was my first time working with that color. It is beautiful. It is a deep color, almost black with a warm base of brown.

The buffet is actually not that old. It had a standard, factory finish on it. Below is a video that shows the before and after of the buffet.

Dixie Belle Coffee Bean

As you can see in the video above, the finish was tired and it needed a facelift! I applied two coats of Coffee Bean, and then gently sanded the entire piece with a very soft sanding sponge. This created a very smooth finish before waxing.

I went with Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in clear for the entire piece, and then added their brown wax along the edges of the doors and the perimeter of the top and sides. I blended the brown wax into the clear.

My client wanted the buffet to be slightly distressed. However, when I tried to rub back to distress, the only thing that came through was white, because it was just rubbing off that factory finish to a white base.

Instead of distressing the typical way, I instead used gilding wax to create that effect. I applied the gilding wax along the edges, where I would have typically distressed it. I then rubbed it in with a soft rag that still had the brown wax on it. This was a great solution because it dulled the gilding wax and created that distressed look.

The drawer pulls are from World Market. I just found out that they no longer are carrying drawer hardware, which is such a shame!
